A new diplomatic push is underway in Washington, D.C., as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by a formidable group of European leaders. The meeting comes in the wake of Trump’s recent summit with Vladimir Putin, which the U.S. President hailed as having yielded “big progress.” The European delegation is seeking to ensure that Ukraine’s voice is heard and its sovereignty is not compromised in any potential peace deal.
The three-hour summit in Alaska was a notable event, marking the first time Putin had been on Western soil since the 2022 invasion. During the talks, the leaders reportedly discussed a controversial “land swap” proposal that would see Ukraine relinquish a significant part of its eastern territory in exchange for Russia giving up small pockets of land. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff also stated that the leaders had agreed to “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine.
In a powerful show of unity, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will be among those joining President Zelenskyy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s presence further solidifies the unified European stance.
The collective visit is a direct response to concerns that Trump may be pushing for a swift resolution to the conflict. The leaders’ mission is to advocate for a peace deal that is just, durable, and based on international law, rather than a quick settlement that could be viewed as a win for Russia.
