Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has proposed eliminating the federal goods and services tax (GST) for all homebuyers in an effort to address Canada’s deepening housing crisis. Speaking at a news conference in Brampton, he said the plan goes beyond his earlier pledge to remove the 5% GST on new homes priced under $1 million.
Under the expanded policy, homes valued up to $1.3 million would also qualify. Poilievre argued that the measure reflects the reality of housing markets in the Greater Toronto Area, where average home prices have surpassed the $1 million mark.
He also reaffirmed other Conservative commitments, including a 50% cut to building taxes, the elimination of capital gains tax on reinvestments in new housing, and linking federal infrastructure dollars directly to home construction. Poilievre warned that housing starts and preconstruction sales have fallen in the GTA, adding that job losses in the sector are a growing concern.
Calling the proposal “common-sense,” he urged cross-party cooperation to deliver faster solutions for Canadians struggling to afford homes. The Conservatives maintain that the government’s current efforts are falling short and that urgent action is required to boost supply and reduce costs.
