In Wake of Putin Meeting, Trump and Zelensky Fortify Their Partnership

Date:

Months after President Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the US President is now fortifying his partnership with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as demonstrated by their collaborative phone call on Saturday. This sequence of events suggests a strategic recalibration by the Trump administration in its approach to resolving the Russia-Ukraine war.
Following the Trump-Putin summit, Zelensky visited Washington in August, where Trump pledged US support for European efforts to police a potential peace deal. Saturday’s call builds directly on that foundation, moving from theoretical support to discussions of “concrete agreements” on military aid, specifically air defense.
The tone of the relationship has clearly shifted. While Trump continues to express a desire for all parties, including Putin, to end the conflict, his recent actions and “disappointment” in the Russian leader indicate a pivot towards more robustly backing Ukraine. The “very positive” call with Zelensky stands in stark contrast to the recent cooling of sentiment towards Moscow.
During the call, Zelensky skillfully navigated this dynamic. He praised Trump’s peacemaking in Gaza and then framed the strengthening of Ukraine as the next logical step. His argument that “real diplomacy” is “achieved through strength” provides a clear rationale for the US to increase its support for Kyiv as the primary means of pressuring Moscow.
This fortification of the Trump-Zelensky partnership is a significant development. It signals to Russia that the US is not pursuing a peace deal at Ukraine’s expense, but is instead committed to empowering its ally to negotiate from a position of security and strength.
