‘Every Minute is Wasted’: Starmer’s Personal Frustration Boils Over at Party In-Fighting

Date:

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s frustration has boiled over, with the PM publicly stating that “every minute” spent on internal leadership gossip is a minute “wasted” in the fight against the cost-of-living crisis. This rare display of personal exasperation underscores the emotional toll of the continuous threat from Mayor Andy Burnham.
The source of the PM’s exasperation is Mayor Andy Burnham’s strategic refusal in interviews to definitively rule out a future leadership bid. This noncommittal position has turned the internal political atmosphere into a continuous, draining distraction for the entire central government.
Starmer, while heading to the G20 summit, attempted to manage his frustration by praising Burnham’s regional work. He highlighted the Mayor’s “really impressive” leadership during the response to the Manchester synagogue attack, trying to frame the situation as one of productive partnership, not personal animosity.
However, Starmer’s true feelings were revealed in his sharp condemnation of the internal plotters. He aggressively dismissed claims of a coup involving Health Secretary Wes Streeting, insisting that the internal chaos is a moral failure, diverting energy from the families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.
For his part, Andy Burnham continues to avoid engaging directly with the emotion, focusing instead on the practical delivery of his £1 billion Manchester growth plan. By remaining outwardly calm and policy-focused, Burnham’s strategy only amplifies the perception of Starmer’s frayed authority.
