Carney Visits Mexico to Strengthen Trade and Repair Relations

Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Mexico this Thursday for a two-day visit aimed at repairing strained ties and expanding trade with Canada’s third-largest export market. The trip follows his recent efforts in Europe to diversify trade away from the United States amid rising protectionism.
Carney is scheduled to meet Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum at the National Palace in Mexico City. Both leaders are expected to address past tensions, including disputes over visa requirements, trade rhetoric, and diplomatic strains that emerged in 2024. Canadian officials now emphasize treating Mexico as a key trading partner in its own right, rather than simply through the lens of U.S. relations.
The visit is expected to focus on deepening cooperation in natural gas, mining, and energy, along with discussions on climate change and mobility between the two countries. Both governments are also aligned on maintaining the current USMCA agreement during its upcoming five-year review, avoiding major renegotiations.
Canadian firms already play a strong role in Mexico, with TC Energy’s $3.9-billion Southeast Gateway pipeline and Bombardier’s extensive manufacturing operations. Mexico, meanwhile, is keen to attract more Canadian investment as it expands port infrastructure, develops its Interoceanic Corridor, and boosts agricultural and tourism exchanges.
The two leaders are expected to issue a joint statement outlining shared priorities in trade and sustainable development.
