Australia’s PM Albanese Emphasizes Human-Centric AI Regulation with Vatican Advisor

Date:

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is advocating for a human-centred approach to artificial intelligence regulation as his government seeks to establish guidelines that prioritize human welfare over financial gain. During a meeting at Kirribilli House in Sydney, Albanese discussed Australia’s AI regulatory priorities with Father Paolo Benanti, the Holy See’s adviser on artificial intelligence.

Albanese emphasized that technological development should serve humanity, echoing Pope Leo XIV’s message on safeguarding human dignity in the age of AI. “Humans must remain in control over AI because the stakes are more than economic, they are social and moral,” Albanese stated, aligning with the Catholic Church’s viewpoint that AI should benefit humanity.

Father Benanti, who has been advising the Vatican on AI since the papacy of Pope Francis, is in Australia at the invitation of the Italian Embassy. His visit included addressing the National Press Club in Canberra and engaging in discussions at the University of Queensland. These interactions highlight Australia’s commitment to developing responsible AI standards that address the rapid technological advancements and their social and ethical implications.

The Australian government is focused on crafting regulations that not only drive technological innovation but also ensure that AI developments align with human interests. The discussions between Albanese and Benanti underscore the importance of international collaboration in shaping AI policies that reinforce ethical standards and safeguard human dignity.
