Spotify Implements AI Artist Identification, Excludes from Recommendation Algorithms

Date:

In a move to maintain the integrity of its platform, Spotify is taking steps to clearly identify and limit the visibility of AI-generated artists. Starting in September, the streaming giant will introduce an “AI persona” label that will appear on the profiles and tracks of AI-created artists. This initiative aims to help users differentiate between real musicians and those developed through artificial intelligence.

The company has announced that by default, AI personas will be excluded from personalized recommendations, a strategy designed to protect real artists from being overshadowed by AI-generated content. Spotify will enable artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, the platform will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI-powered tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas.

This decision arises amid the rapid increase in AI-generated music, which has posed challenges for platforms inundated with artificial and low-quality content. Spotify previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks within a year, underscoring the magnitude of this issue. By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to preserve the quality of its music library and ensure that genuine artists receive the exposure they deserve.

As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent in the music industry, transparency has become a key concern for listeners. Spotify recognizes the growing demand for clarity regarding whether an artist is a real individual or an AI creation. The company believes that by providing this transparency, it can enhance the listening experience and foster trust among its users.
