The Velvet Sundown’s AI Origin Sparks Industry-Wide Transparency Debate

Date:

A band called The Velvet Sundown amassed over a million Spotify streams, charming listeners with their country-folk style. But the band’s entire existence—from the music to the members—was fabricated by artificial intelligence.
Their albums, Floating On Echoes and Dust And Silence, were released without suspicion. Fans believed they were connecting with real musicians, not a digital experiment.
The truth was revealed by an adjunct member, who exposed the use of Suno, a generative AI platform. The band’s representatives initially denied the claims, but eventually confessed via social media.
This incident has sparked an industry-wide debate about the need for transparency in AI-generated music. Experts are calling for clear disclosure to ensure audiences know when they’re listening to AI creations.
