NYC Executive Order Targets Antisemitism Before Key Election

Date:

Eric Adams has officially adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s antisemitism definition for use across New York City government through an executive order signed at a Manhattan synagogue. Adams emphasized the urgency of combating antisemitism given recent violent incidents and the normalization of what he characterized as hateful rhetoric since October 7, 2023.
The policy has sparked debate due to controversial examples within the IHRA definition that critics argue could criminalize legitimate political criticism of Israeli policies. These provisions include identifying as potentially antisemitic any claims about Israel representing a racist endeavor or any differential treatment compared to other democratic nations, raising concerns about free expression limitations.
As Adams prepares for a competitive primary while facing federal bribery charges, his adoption of this definition reflects both policy conviction and electoral strategy. His main rivals present dramatically different approaches: Andrew Cuomo has demonstrated strong support for Israeli leadership, while Zohran Mamdani has taken progressive positions that include calling Israeli actions genocidal and promising to arrest Netanyahu if he visits the city.
