Carney Meets Trump After World Cup Draw to Discuss Future of USMCA

Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged U.S. President Donald Trump in friendly exchanges during the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, where both leaders appeared alongside Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. Following the event, the three held a private 45-minute meeting focused on preserving the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
Carney’s visit aimed to encourage continued U.S. participation in the trade pact and to push for the removal of U.S. tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. All three leaders agreed to continue cooperation on strengthening the agreement ahead of its upcoming review.
During the ceremony, Trump praised the cooperation among the host nations and highlighted strong relations with Canada and Mexico. Carney used the occasion to promote Canada’s multicultural identity, while Sheinbaum emphasized the contributions of the Mexican people.
The friendly tone throughout the event was seen as an effort by Canada and Mexico to maintain constructive relations with the U.S. and avoid further trade tensions.
