Canada Positions India as a Central Partner in Its Indo-Pacific Trade Strategy

Date:

Canada has designated India as a central partner in its long-term plan to diversify trade beyond North America, with a focus on strengthening its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. During International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu’s recent visit, Canada reaffirmed its intention to deepen cooperation with India across priority sectors, including investment, innovation, and supply-chain development.
The visit revitalised the Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment, co-chaired by Sidhu and India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Sidhu also met with Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, emphasising Canada’s readiness to support India’s energy needs through liquefied natural gas, carbon-capture technologies, and critical minerals essential for industrial growth.
Momentum is expected to grow as multiple organisations prepare trade missions to India in the coming months. The Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce (CHCC) announced a delegation that will visit several Indian states in early January to explore opportunities in fast-expanding sectors. The chamber also launched a new India-Canada Trade Committee to strengthen bilateral engagement throughout the year.
With India positioned as one of the world’s most rapidly expanding economies, Canadian businesses are being encouraged to seize emerging opportunities and deepen commercial links as both nations reaffirm their commitment to long-term economic partnership.
