Us-Canada trade talks are dead, with president Trump announcing their “termination.” he pointed to a “fake” ad from Canada as the reason.
The ad, sponsored by Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. Trump called this “egregious behavior” and “fraudulent.”
He claimed the ad was an attempt to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs on Canadian goods. These tariffs have hit Ontario’s economy hard.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation also condemned the ad, a fact Trump cited. The foundation said the “selective audio” “misrepresents” Reagan’s comments and is exploring legal options.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, freezes a c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship and dashes hopes for a quick resolution to the trade war.
