The partnership between Việt Nam and Australia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is set to deepen, following talks between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. The two sides have agreed to bolster cooperation among Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra, with a focus on various key sectors. Ambassador Tâm expressed enthusiasm for Barr’s forthcoming visit to Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City, anticipating that it will pave the way for new collaborative ventures. He underscored the potential for joint efforts in renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development.
Ambassador Tâm also put forward a proposal to establish a formal friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT. This agreement is aimed at fostering long-term partnerships across multiple areas of interest. Such an initiative is expected to solidify ties and facilitate sustained cooperation between the involved cities, enhancing both economic and cultural exchanges.
For ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, this visit to Việt Nam marks his first, and he has identified the country as one of the ACT’s priority economic partners under its international engagement strategy. Barr responded positively to the idea of forming a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội, which would help in exploring mutual interests. He highlighted the potential for joint ventures in green transition, electric transport, and renewable energy, all contributing to the shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Barr also conveyed his readiness to engage in public diplomacy activities during future visits by senior Vietnamese officials to Australia. This reflects a commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations and a shared interest in sustainable development. Through this, both regions aim to leverage their strengths and collaborate on innovative solutions to global challenges.
