Travelers between Australia and the United States can look forward to a faster journey as Qantas is set to launch nonstop flights from Sydney to New York by mid-2028. This development will notably cut down travel time to approximately 18 hours, eliminating the current stopover in Los Angeles and its 21-hour total travel duration. This change promises to enhance convenience and comfort for passengers, particularly those on business or tight schedules.
The airline’s announcement is part of its ambitious Project Sunrise program, which aims to establish ultra-long-haul routes that directly connect Australia with major global destinations. The Sydney-New York service will follow the Sydney-London route anticipated to begin in 2027, marking a significant expansion in Qantas’s long-haul offerings.
Qantas plans to operate the new route using the Airbus A350-1000ULR, an aircraft specifically designed for extended flights of up to 22 hours. With 238 seats across first-class suites, business suites, premium economy, and economy cabins, the aircraft will also feature a dedicated wellbeing zone. This space will be available for passengers to stretch, engage in guided exercise activities, and enjoy snacks and drinks, enhancing the overall travel experience on these lengthy flights.
Tickets for the Sydney-New York nonstop service are expected to be available for purchase in August 2027, although specific fares and the exact start date have yet to be disclosed by Qantas. The airline has committed to acquiring 12 Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, with the first delivery expected in 2027, facilitating the expansion of its ultra-long-haul network.
Through Project Sunrise, Qantas is set to redefine long-distance air travel by providing direct connections from Australia to key international cities, thereby eliminating the need for stopovers and making travel more seamless for passengers worldwide.
