NSW Labor Introduces Innovative Tech Solutions for Pokies Before Election

Date:

The New South Wales Labor Party has taken a firm step toward poker machine reform by unanimously approving a new policy platform at its state conference. This move comes as the party gears up for the next state election, signaling a commitment to address gambling-related harm more aggressively. The adopted policy includes several significant measures, such as imposing a moratorium on licences for new poker machines, increasing taxes for clubs earning over A$20 million from gaming machines, and developing a long-term strategy to substantially cut down the number of poker machines across the state within the next decade.

One of the key proposals under this new platform is the permanent removal of half of all gaming machines whenever they are transferred between venues. Additionally, the policy endorses the implementation of mandatory facial recognition technology in gaming rooms. This measure aims to bolster the statewide self-exclusion register, thereby supporting problem gamblers in avoiding gaming areas. The reforms have received enthusiastic backing from party members and senior officials, who argue that New South Wales needs to intensify efforts to combat gambling addiction and mitigate the social damage caused by poker machines.

While the policy doesn’t immediately translate into law, it clearly indicates a more rigorous stance by the state government as the election approaches. The conference not only focused on poker machine reforms but also engaged in broader discussions on protest laws and various other policy issues. During speeches by senior Labor leaders, demonstrations related to Palestine were also observed, reflecting the diverse concerns being addressed at the conference.

Moreover, the new platform urges the federal government to take decisive action by banning gambling inducements. This call to action is part of a larger effort to enhance gambling regulations across Australia, reinforcing the Labor Party’s commitment to curbing gambling-related issues at both state and national levels. The party’s strengthened position on these matters highlights an evolving approach to tackling the complex challenges posed by gambling in the community.
