Tech Surge: EVs and Hybrids Dominate Nearly 50% of Australian Sales

Date:

In a significant shift in consumer preferences, nearly half of all newly purchased vehicles in Australia during the second quarter of 2026 were electric or hybrid models. This trend corresponds with persistent fluctuations in fuel prices, prompting a move away from traditional petrol-powered cars.

The latest figures reveal that battery electric vehicles (EVs) captured a record 21.03% of the market share between April and June. Additionally, plug-in hybrids held a 10.58% share. The surge in electric vehicle sales was marked by a notable increase, with the number of battery EVs sold more than doubling from 34,435 in the first quarter to 69,414 in the second.

The dominance of petrol-powered vehicles has waned, as their market share dropped to 50.84%, marking the lowest level ever recorded. This transition is occurring amidst expectations of rising fuel prices, following the discontinuation of the federal government’s temporary reduction of the fuel excise.

This shift underscores a growing inclination among consumers towards more sustainable and cost-effective transportation options. The increasing adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles aligns with broader global trends aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating the impact of price volatility in the energy sector.
