New Zealanders may need to brace for sustained high fuel prices and potential supply challenges as global energy routes face increasing disruptions. Z Energy’s chief executive, Lindis Jones, has warned that while the country’s fuel supplies are currently stable, the risks have escalated due to geopolitical tensions.
The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, coupled with the involvement of Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen, is causing significant pressure on fuel shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and key pipelines in Saudi Arabia. This has led to longer transportation times and higher costs for fuel reaching New Zealand.
Jones noted that although fuel is still arriving in the country, the safety margins for supply have become thinner. Inventories have been decreasing, and some refineries are delaying maintenance work to keep production levels steady, thereby reducing the market’s capacity to handle further disruptions.
The global uncertainty in energy markets means that New Zealanders are unlikely to see any significant relief in fuel prices soon, according to Jones. The current situation suggests that elevated prices will persist, influenced by the ongoing international tensions affecting energy supply routes.
