Mark Carney Joins Alberta Rallies to Support Canadian Unity Before Referendum

Date:

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to attend two rallies in Alberta on October 15 and 16, promoting Canadian unity ahead of the province’s upcoming referendum on October 19. The “Forever Canadian” rallies in Calgary and Edmonton aim to encourage voters to support Alberta’s continued membership within Canada.

The campaign, spearheaded by former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, addresses key issues such as constitutional and immigration matters, alongside a pivotal question regarding Alberta’s potential move towards a future separation referendum. Carney, who hails from Alberta, has been vocal about the potential ramifications of separation, warning residents of a long and uncertain process should they choose to leave Canada.

In a Thanksgiving message recorded at his former high school in Edmonton, Carney emphasized the importance of national unity. He highlighted federal plans for significant projects in Alberta, including a proposed pipeline to Canada’s West Coast, underscoring that national cooperation is crucial for advancing economic and infrastructure priorities. Carney argued that Canadians are stronger together, especially as the nation faces economic and security challenges.

In addition to Carney’s efforts, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to deliver a speech at a conference in Calgary on October 16, supporting the cause of Canadian unity. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is also slated to address the event, adding to the chorus of voices urging for Alberta to remain a part of Canada.
