Canada Unlikely to Reach Trade Deal With US Before Midterms, Says Carney

Date:

Canada is unlikely to finalize a trade deal with the United States before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Speaking before a Liberal caucus meeting, Carney emphasized that while Canada is open to negotiating a beneficial agreement, the two countries are not currently close to reaching terms that align with both nations’ interests.

The discussions come after a previous round of negotiations broke down in August over U.S. proposals that Canada found unfavorable. Ottawa opposed conditions that could limit its trade negotiations with other countries, undermine French-language requirements, and negatively impact the Canadian auto industry.

In response to the stalled talks, U.S. President Donald Trump enforced a 50% tariff on several Canadian products, prompting Canada to impose equivalent retaliatory tariffs. Despite recent political-level discussions aimed at easing these tariffs, especially on Canadian steel and automobiles, formal negotiations have yet to resume.

The trade tensions have also become a point of contention in the U.S., with some Republican candidates voicing concerns about the tariffs’ effects on businesses and communities in border states. As the midterm elections approach, uncertainty remains over whether a resolution can be reached in time.

Sources familiar with the situation indicate that although there is a focus on resolving the tariff dispute, it remains unclear if an agreement will be achieved before the elections. Both nations appear committed to continuing discussions but remain cautious about predicting a swift resolution.
