Canada Pledges Advanced Air Defense Technology to Ukraine During Zelenskyy Visit

Date:

During a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone systems. This initiative includes a substantial C$350 million (US$253 million) contribution, part of a US-led effort designed to supply Ukraine with military hardware, training, and other forms of defense support. The commitment arrives amid heightened Russian missile and drone offensives targeting Ukraine.

In addition to military support, Canada has pledged C$450 million in loan guarantees to enhance Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing aims to repair damaged facilities, increase energy storage capacity, and ensure the continuity of electricity supply to critical services like hospitals. This multifaceted approach underscores Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s resilience in the face of ongoing conflict.

Carney and Zelenskyy formalized their collaboration with an agreement to pursue a “hundred-year partnership” focusing on key areas such as defense, critical minerals, and energy. This long-term strategy is intended to fortify the bilateral relationship and ensure continued cooperation in these essential sectors.

Canada also announced that a significant portion of its domestic drone production—specifically 30%—will be allocated to Ukraine. Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of these drones in battlefield operations, where they will aid Ukrainian forces and safeguard civilian populations.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting is anticipated to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, as diplomatic efforts persist to reignite negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
