Australia Encouraged to Focus on AI Talent to Address Skilled Labor Gap

Date:

Independent Senator David Pocock is advocating for skilled migrants to become the focal point of Australia’s migration policy, emphasizing the need to address the country’s pressing workforce shortages in the artificial intelligence and housing sectors. His remarks follow a report by the Powering Skills Organisation, which highlighted that by 2030, Australia might require an additional 72,000 electricians and tradespeople to meet the demands of major construction and infrastructure projects.

Pocock questioned the current priorities in Australia’s migration planning, suggesting that skilled trades should receive more attention, especially given the difficulties in meeting the housing construction needs. He pointed out that the national conversation on migration has been too focused on total population figures, lacking a targeted strategy to fill essential workforce gaps.

Furthermore, Pocock expressed concern about potential public resistance to AI data centres in Australia, drawing parallels to opposition observed in the United States. He stressed that without securing long-term economic advantages from hosting such infrastructure, Australia might encounter similar challenges.

He also highlighted the risk of multinational technology companies benefiting from substantial investments in AI infrastructure while potentially minimizing their tax contributions in Australia. To counter this, Pocock urged the government to implement measures that ensure the country gains enduring economic returns from accommodating extensive data centres, particularly as the demand for AI infrastructure grows.
