Alberta Seeks Private Proposals for High-Speed Rail Between Edmonton and Calgary

Date:

Alberta is moving forward with plans for a high-speed rail system that will connect Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary, potentially transforming transportation in the province. The government plans to issue a formal request this fall for private companies to submit proposals for the rail line, which will also link to the international airports in Calgary and Edmonton. This initiative is part of Alberta’s strategy to address the transportation demands of its rapidly growing population.

Premier Danielle Smith announced that the federal government has agreed to refer the project to its Major Projects Office once a private-sector partner is chosen. Alberta anticipates selecting a preferred proponent by April 2027, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development.

The proposed high-speed rail service aims to improve connectivity within the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, home to approximately 80 percent of Alberta’s population. As part of the planning process, consultations will be conducted with Indigenous communities, municipalities, and the general public to evaluate the project’s potential costs, benefits, and impacts.

This rail project reflects Alberta’s effort to enhance its transportation infrastructure in response to ongoing population growth and increasing demand. By improving links between major urban centers and airports, the high-speed rail line could significantly ease travel and contribute to regional economic development.
