Canada Post Unveils New Diwali Stamp as Mississauga Reverses Fireworks Ban

Date:

Canada Post has launched a new Diwali stamp, continuing a festive tradition that began in 2017. The latest edition, unveiled in Toronto, was designed by Ritu Kanal of Underline Studio and features a colorful Rangoli pattern along with the word “Diwali” in both Hindi and English. The stamp is available in booklets of six and as an Official First Day Cover.
The design celebrates the artistic heritage of Rangoli — intricate floor patterns made from grains, flower petals, colored sand, or rice — which are traditionally created during the festival to welcome prosperity and positivity.
In a separate development, the city council of Mississauga, part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), reversed a proposed ban on fireworks ahead of Diwali. Instead, the council introduced regulated hours for fireworks on private property and specific festivals, including Diwali, New Year, Victoria Day, Lunar New Year, and Canada Day. The decision was praised by the Indo-Canadian community for balancing safety with cultural inclusion.
Community organizations such as the Canadian National Council of Hindus (CNCH) and the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) welcomed the move, calling it a positive example of embracing diversity while ensuring public safety.
