Alberta is moving forward with plans for a high-speed rail system that will connect Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary, potentially transforming transportation in the province. Premier Danielle Smith announced that the federal government has agreed to refer the project to its Major Projects Office once a private-sector partner is chosen. Alberta anticipates selecting a preferred proponent by April 2027, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development.
The proposed high-speed rail service aims to improve connectivity within the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, home to approximately 80 percent of Alberta’s population. As part of the planning process, consultations will be conducted with Indigenous communities, municipalities, and the general public to evaluate the project’s potential costs, benefits, and impacts.
