Vietnam and Canada Strengthen Ties with Strategic Partnership Agreement

Date:

Vietnam and Canada have elevated their diplomatic ties to a strategic partnership, a move aimed at broadening cooperation in several key sectors including trade, energy, agriculture, defense, technology, and education. This development was announced by Vietnamese President To Lam during his state visit to Canada, highlighting shared interests between the two nations in enhancing resilience, fostering diverse partnerships, and supporting a rules-based international order.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed support for the upgraded relationship, citing the growth in bilateral ties since a 2017 cooperation agreement that spanned areas such as investment, defense, and academia. Canadian officials emphasized that the new partnership will prioritize energy, agriculture, defense cooperation, and stronger people-to-people connections.

With Vietnam being Canada’s largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, the economic relationship between the two countries is significant, marked by two-way merchandise trade exceeding $20 billion last year. Canada primarily exports food, metals, and fertilizers to Vietnam, while imports from Vietnam include electronics, clothing, furniture, and footwear.

Both nations are members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a framework designed to enhance trade and economic cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region. The strategic partnership upgrade comes as both Vietnam and Canada seek to diversify trade and supply chains amidst growing global economic uncertainties.

This strengthened partnership is particularly crucial for Vietnam as it endeavors to expand its international economic relationships beyond reliance on major markets, thereby fostering a more robust and diversified economic landscape.
