Mexico Advocates Tech-Driven Solutions in USMCA Talks Over Auto, Steel Tariffs

Date:

Mexico plans to call on the United States to eliminate tariffs on steel and automobiles during the forthcoming evaluation of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In addition to addressing these tariffs, the Mexican government aims to advocate for more robust investment protections, enhanced economic security measures, and regulations to deter unilateral trade actions.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed optimism about the renewal of the trade agreement for another 16 years, despite the U.S. decision to implement annual reviews through 2036. Mexico has consistently raised several trade issues with Washington, while underscoring the significance of preserving balanced trade relations and bolstering economic integration within North America.

The USMCA remains effective, but the ongoing disputes over tariffs and the prospect of yearly reviews have heightened uncertainty for businesses and investors across the region. These factors have contributed to a climate of unpredictability, affecting economic decisions and planning.

Mexico’s efforts to negotiate changes reflect its commitment to ensuring that the trade pact continues to benefit all parties involved while addressing specific concerns that may hinder economic growth. The focus on strengthening the agreement aligns with the broader goal of maintaining a stable and integrated economic landscape in North America.
