The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has directed airlines operating Boeing 737 Max jets to carry out inspections for potential cracks in a specific fuselage component. This directive involves approximately 471 aircraft and the examinations are slated to commence in September. The primary focus of these inspections is the bear strap, a structural element that supports the fuselage around the aircraft’s exit doors. This step follows the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation planes, which had prompted prior inspections for those models.
Despite no reported cases of such cracks in the current 737 Max fleet, regulators noted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with its predecessors, raising concerns that it could face the same issues. The FAA has cautioned that if left undetected, these cracks could compromise a significant structural component and potentially threaten the aircraft’s structural integrity.
Boeing has acknowledged the situation, affirming that it has been collaborating with airlines on this matter since 2019.
